The Kid Who Smiled Less
There's a version of me most people never got to meet. A kid who smiled easily. Who laughed freely. Who spent hours watching the Discovery Channel with his grandmother — that was our thing, our ritual, our bond.
Then the bullying started. Being light-skinned with green eyes in environments where that made you a target — it does something to a kid. Gradually, you start to shrink. You become an observer instead of a participant. You watch. You study. You figure out how people move, what they need, what they're really saying underneath what they say out loud.
It felt like loneliness then. It was a survival skill that would quietly become my superpower.
"I became an observer because I was too afraid to participate. What I didn't know was that watching so closely was going to make me better at understanding people than almost anyone in the room."
